Printing with a Gel Plate

Dasha Alexandrov Gel Plate Four

While working on my mixed media book (to which I will dedicate a separate post) I’ve  stumbled into a new kind of printmaking – printing with a gel plate. It is as far away from traditional printmaking as one can get.  It mainly produces monoprints, although some (very limited and varied) multiples are possible. Because no expertise is needed and it is so easy and quick to pull prints, it  becomes rather addictive very fast. You can produce images frameable in their own right or make collage background papers, etc. It also gave me the opportunity to delve more into Color which is very pleasant.  While working on the big Book, I made a huge number of gel prints that found their way into free-standing collages and cards for friends.

It was so interesting to learn new things, to make something that I was not good at before, to experiment with textures and colors.

Here are some fun prints that I wanted to share. They will become backgrounds, but they are also quite beautiful on their own.
