Some year ago my good friend who is an amazing singer had an idea for a concert based on the vocal pieces by Antonio Vivaldi. Vivaldi, of course, is extremely popular, but the vocal pieces are less known and, in my view, so very lovely. The concert became more of a multimedia event, featuring, besides the music, dance pieces, masks and art work. I provided the art work, seizing on the opportunity to delve into something I wanted to do for a while: the theme of a Masquerade. For me it was a way to explore Drama on an esthetical level, prod it and look at it without inviting it into my actual life. I respect the alluring pull of Drama in our lives, but I don’t want to be led by it. Creating a series of masked characters and situations that pointed to more of a story behind them was so much fun that the series never really came to an end. Some pieces are still in my head waiting to come out.
Being a person who more naturally gravitates to Twigs, Stones and Bones, it was interesting to give in to a sudden temptation of Glitter, Ruffles and Surfaces.
I wanted to remind the potential viewer that masquerade is not safe, it is a mental space that invites secrets, seduction and the Hunt. And we don’t know who’s behind the mask.
